There is an amazingly wide variety of essential oils available these days, and for a beginner it can be hard to know where to start, and what oils to choose. If you are a newcomer to the world of aromatherapy, it’s easy to bring refreshing and uplifting fragrances into your home.
As you become more familiar with different fragrances, you will find that they evoke different moods and feelings, and that the effects of each can change according to weather and season, or even the time of day. Lavender and patchouli are soothing, eucalyptus and peppermint are refreshing and energizing, ylang ylang and patchouli are sensual and romantic, orange and lemon are refreshing and uplifting. You may find that your results vary, and this is normal. Oils do not work in exactly the same way for everyone, and we all experience and process fragrances somewhat differently.
As you can see from this short list, some oils have similar properties, but they do not have identical effects. This means that when you’re looking for a specific effect you have a variety of fragrances to choose from depending on what you need at the time. It can take time to learn exactly how these will affect you, so if you’re new to aromatherapy it’s helpful to select three or four different oils and take the time to get to know them before choosing new ones.
As a beginner, you don’t really need anything other than the oils themselves to take advantage of their effects. Diffusers are a great way of dispersing fragrances throughout the air, and there are many attractive varieties to choose from. However if you don’t have one, a few drops of oil on a tissue or cotton ball placed in a warm spot can be effective too.
