If you are a busy parent (who isn’t), then you are probably wondering just how you can fit time into your day to make things with your children. All parents feel this way. However, if you keep the following supplies on hand, you would be surprised just how many fun things you can do.
Basic craft supplies you should have on hand when you have kids are:
Construction paper, crayons, washable markers, tissue paper, yarn, clear contact paper, washable glue or glue sticks, safety scissors, stickers of every shape and size, stamps and washable ink or paint.
This may look like a lot of “stuff” to have on hand at any given time, but it really is not. If you have one small cupboard set aside for your crafting supplies, everything listed above can easily fit inside. Even a single file drawer would be sufficient space to fit it all.
You may also be saying, “Wow! That will be expensive.” That, too, would not be true. You would be surprized how many of those things you can find at your local dollar store! I have found tissue paper, construction paper, safety scissors, crayons, markers, glue sticks and stickers at my local dollar store! The supplies were of good quality and quantity - it was not a package of construction paper with 10 sheets in it. It actually had 100! That is not too bad for $1.00.
I will give this advice - skip the fine tip markers! They easily dry out if left open for even the shortest amount of time. They also don’t color all that well. Granted, the larger tip markers are harder to keep in the lines in coloring books, but if the thin tips are dried out anyway, they aren’t working in the coloring books either.
Over the next several months, as this compendium grows, I will be posting simple crafts to do with young children using the above supplies + one or maybe two other items. Most everything I will list as supplies will be things readily available around your home.
The most important thing about doing crafts is the togetherness. What you make and whether it looks perfect are secondary to that.
