Manufactured by Milton Bradley, this is a very cute game for children ages 3-6; maybe a little younger, definitely a bit older.
Think of those duck ponds you used to see at the county fairs where a prize was on the bottom! This is basically the same scenario. On the “board”, which looks like a pond, is a strip of blue that moves around in a circle. The ducks move around on the strip of blue for the players to pick up.
There are 12 ducks in all, each with a different colored dot on the bottom. 3 red, 3 blue, 3 yellow and 3 green. The players each get a nest, which is one of the four colors listed. That player must pick out his three ducks and fill his nest before someone else does. The first person to fill his nest wins.
Here are my thoughts on this game:
Pros:
1. Very colorful. I’m finding this is a pro with many children’s games I’ve purchased for my kids. Even if the game is a total flop, the colors sure are nice!
2. Easy to play. No reading necessary! I like this, as my 2.5 year old isn’t talking yet, but she can play this game with her sisters and I. (With a little help.)
3. Easy to set up. My 4 and 5 year olds can set this game up independently and play whenever they want. Even my 2.5 year old sets the board up and turns it on…although we aren’t playing at the time.
4. Helps develop memory skills and hand/eye coordination. Although not as great as some other games for these skills, I have found it amazing how my kids can see their sibling pick a duck with their color, follow it around the board until their turn, then pick it up for their nest.
Cons:
1. LOUD! I am surprized my neighbors haven’t called the police, accusing us of sound pollution. Makes a great alarm clock when my 2.5 year old gets out of bed to give it a try at 6 AM!
2. Along the lines of #1, it is too sensitive. Just putting the box lid on turns the game on.
3. Cheap stickers. The colors on the bottom and the eyes on the ducks are just stickers that you put on the plastic ducks. It would be much nicer if they were just one whole unit, created with the colors and eyes as part of the piece.
Overall, even with the cons mentioned, this is a good game for little ones. If my 2.5 year old will sit and play it all the way through, that is saying a lot! Would be great as a Christmas or birthday gift for your child’s friends and cousins, too!
