Politics continues to head south to the political waste pits.
We have just seen Ralph Reed, the former director of the Christian Coalition and former Chairman of the Georgia State Republican Party, lost a primary for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia because he had ties to scandal plagued Jack Abramoff.
Closer to home, Senator Joseph Lieberman is having problems because of his support for the Iraq War. There appears to be a lot of opposition that his opponent, Ned Lamont, a former cable executive, is trying to make political whoopee with. So Lieberman is trying to gain support by campaigning with former President Bill Clinton and California Senator Barbara Boxer. Apparently combining support for high moral standards in high places with insights on geopolitical tensions. If he loses the primary, it would be a big upset, but during the Vietnam era I remember the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee taking a big primary loss to upstart Elizabeth Holtzman, who went on to serve four terms in Congress.
Here in New York, Attorney General Spitzes who has shown no particular interest in ethics during his eight years in office although he is the top legal officer in the state and he is often asked for ethical opinions, is now promising an ethical cleanup in Albany. I find this hard to believe because he has a record of looking the other way on Hillary, corrupt Brooklyn state judges, the corrupt Brooklyn political machine and so on. If he knows something, I would like to suggest he name names.
He has shown no interest in using the internet to post security camera pictures of perpetrators to help capture bank robbers nor using the internet to file police reports or disseminate information to cut car thefts and so on. This is beneath Attorney General Spitzer.
He also appears headed for a spending binge promising to pay for all new political needs under the sun, while, at the same time, promising a tax cut. This sounds like Super Mario Cuomo promising free health benefits and then repealing his alleged reform because people found out they had to pay and did not want to.
I do not think much of this, let me tell you.
