Anti-virus computer programs identify and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (called malware). They do this by scanning computer files to look for known viruses, and by identifying suspicious behavior which might be an indication of infection, such as port monitoring or data capture.

Ports are places where information enters and exits your computer – port scanning has legitimate uses, particularly if you have two or more computers networked together, but it may also indicate that someone is looking for an access point to break into your computer. Data capture, too, has legitimate uses, but can be used maliciously to retrieve data from your computer or monitor your online activities.

Protecting your computer from malware is vital. Malware is an umbrella term which includes keyloggers, viruses, trojans, and worms. Keyloggers are just what they sound like – programs that record your keystrokes. These programs are capable of sending information such as passwords and bank account or credit card numbers to whomever has hacked into your computer. Trojans can damage your computer and may also install a “back door” into your computer, through which someone can retrieve personal information stored in your files. Viruses and worms infect your computer and replicate themselves, and may then hijack your computer system or use shared files or your email address book to infect other computers.

Most commercial anti-virus products use a combination of file scanning and behavior monitoring to protect your computer. Knowing how to use your anti-virus software is just as important as having it at all – here are some basic tips for using anti-virus software effectively.

Install anti-virus software on every computer in your network.

Update your software frequently – make sure your software is set to check for and download updates automatically.

Make sure your anti-virus software is running at all times – there are some exceptions to this rule. Some major software updates, such as Windows Service Packs, require you to disable anti-virus software temporarily, as it can interfere with the installation.

Configure your software so that it scans all files, and not just programs. Scans take a little longer, but it provides an extra level of safety.

You can usually configure anti-virus software to perform a mini-scan at start-up. This is a great option as many viruses become active the next time you reboot your computer after becoming infected.

Don’t allow your email programs to open attachments automatically.

Don’t open email files from recipients you don’t recognize – if you think it’s important, contact the recipient.

Scan any program or document you download before opening it.
