There are so many reasons to make smart eating a part of your everyday life. A healthy diet benefits every aspect of your life – your appearance (skin, hair, and weight), your energy levels, and your emotional well-being. Not only will you be stronger, but you will also think more clearly and improve your memory. Some find that eating smart keeps depression and stress at bay. Others have even found that their grades have improved significantly when they eat right.

Here are some easy to follow tips to keep eating right!

    1. Keep a regular meal schedule – Don’t skip meals and snacks, especially breakfast. When you eat regularly, your body gets the fuel it needs throughout the day. It gives you energy that you will need for all your activities. You also won’t grave those high fat, high calorie junk foods so much because your stomach is already full of the good stuff.

    2. Make a wide variety of foods part of everyday eating – Make sure to consume at least five fruits and vegetables a day, in addition to whole grains, proteins and dairy products. Many say to eat the rainbow by choosing different colored foods – yellow bananas, green peppers, red tomatoes, orange cantaloupe, blueberries, purple plums, etc.

    3. Limit the consumption of high fat and high sugar foods – This isn’t saying “cut out cake” or “completely avoid pizza”. When you try to cut out certain foods you like a lot, you will have the tendency to binge and go overboard eating those items at some point. However, keeping them as part of your diet in moderation, along with healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, will keep you from overeating and allow you to enjoy them a little at a time.

    4. Find healthy alternatives for snacking – Substitute high sugar sodas for water mixed with fruit juice. Substitute fatty potato chips with air-popped or microwave popcorn. Substitute cookies with dried or fresh fruits. If you are craving something sweet, snack on fruit. If you are craving something salty, choose popcorn or pretzels. Changing how you snack can go a long way to improving your health.

No one will eat smart all the time – and that is okay! Don’t beat yourself up because you ate a pint of ice cream in one sitting. (Some events warrant that kind of eating behavior.) Just make sure to make that a rare occurrence instead of an everyday event.
