There are many men and women that have had liposuction performed and they are amazed with the results. The important thing to remember about this procedure is that it is not meant to be a means of weight loss. Liposuction is the suctioning of fat cells out of specific areas on the body to help sculpt the body. Typically, liposuction is very effective in sculpting the body, but it must be maintained with diet and exercise after the surgery.
When looking into whether you want to have the surgery performed, it is very important to have realistic expectations about the surgery. Liposuction can enhance your appearance, but it can take several surgeries for the best results, as only a limited amount of fat cells can be removed at one time. Your doctor may want to schedule several surgeries for you, each about four to six weeks apart.
Another issue to consider is your maintenance once the surgery is over. Doctors tend to believe that once the body reaches adult age, the body does not develop any more fat cells. This, however, does not stop existing fat cells from expanding. Therefore, if you have fat cells surgically removed, it will not stop others from getting larger. In order to keep this from happening, weight gain must be controlled by diet and exercise.
The results of liposuction will also not be the same for an obese person that it would be for a smaller individual. There can be some complications when it comes to the results of liposuction when performed on an obese person. For example, an obese person with larger, fatty areas may experience unsightly skin folds after surgery. These are most likely to occur in such areas as the inner thighs, groin, upper arms, and even the armpits. This is generally the results of poor skin tone, not the result of bad technique by the surgeon. In order to correct this, more surgery may be necessary where the excess skin is removed.
If you decide to go along with the liposuction surgery, your doctor will discus with you the method of surgery they feel best of you and why. Some methods, such as traditional liposuction, require general anesthesia, while others, such s the tumescent method, require local anesthesia only and can be done in the office. You will also want to discuss with your doctor the risks and possible complications of liposuction surgery. Some of these risks may include a blood clot on the lung, toxicity, infection, and skin necrosis. Unfortunately, as with any surgery, complications may result in death.
Once your surgery is over, you will need ample time to heal. Most likely, you will have fluid leakage from the incisions. This is common and sometimes a small drainage tube is placed under the skin to help prevent fluid build up. Healing, however, takes time and you should be able to get back to your normal routine within a few weeks. You should avoid any strenuous activity, however, for about a month.
The results you see directly after surgery will be noticeable, however, due to swelling, you will not notice complete results for approximately three months when all the swelling should disappear.
As long as you go into liposuction surgery with realistic expectations, you should find yourself happy with the outcome. Just remember, the liposuction is not a cure. You should still exercise and diet in order to maintain your weight.
