It is truly amazing what some cats find to be funny.

Quite often, cats will let their humans know how they want to play, because it fits in with their general attitude of life, which is, “I run this place”. Other times, they forget humans entirely and simply do what amuses them. Cat owners never tire of talking or hearing about other cat owners’ humorous moments, because as any cat owner knows, to have them is to love them!

For example, my Ruby has undertaken an obligation to be fulfilled around 11:45 every night. She picks up one or two cat collars which are placed near the door and carries them in her mouth to either the entryway carpet or upstairs hallway. After she places them down in certain spots, she meows loudly for about 30 seconds, in which to say, “I’ve done my job.” This alone is amusing enough; what is exceptional is that if someone picks up a collar before retiring to bed and puts it back near the door, Ruby repeats this procedure over again! She just cannot sleep unless the collars are where she wants them! She is the most fun loving of our 3 cats. She’s the one who will jump up onto the table and grab an entire piece of pie to cart off, and the one who enjoys squeezing her bulk onto the rim of the bathtub to watch me take a bath. (I have to wonder if she finds it fun or simply funny!)

Grayboy, our senior statesman at 15, is feeling the effects of aging kidney conditions and is thirstier than in earlier years. Although we have multiple water bowls on the first floor and outside, he prefers to drink from sinks. However, Grayboy deems it only appropriate if the water is of a certain temperature, pressure and speed. In the middle of the night this persnickety-ness is quite annoying, and I do imagine him laughing at us as we fiddle with the taps while half asleep!

Gabby, Ruby’s daughter, is the most sensitive of the group, which contradicts her killer reputation. She must be putting on an act for us! We are always amazed how such a scaredy-cat who’s never been known to scratch, bite or even hiss can bring home so many outdoor critters.

With their laid back attitude, love of comfort, and an intelligent ability to play, cats surely know how to get the most out of life!
