Babysitting is a big responsibility. It should not be seen as a way to make a quick buck without doing any work. You should know that when the adults of the household step out of the door, any life and death situations that may come along will be in your hands.
This isn’t to say that some nights won’t be mostly your sitting in a chair watching television while your charges sleep. There will be nights like this. However, there will also be nights where a little one wakes up crying, sits on your lap, and is burning up with a fever. You need to know what to do is such a situation each and every time.
Here is a list of things you should do when babysitting…and also some things you should not do:
The Dos:
- DO keep a list of all contact phone numbers right by the phone. This includes the parents’ cell numbers (or the places they will be, if no cell phone is available), police, fire, poison control, and a neighbor willing to help for minor situations. If you feel it is an emergency, never hesitate to call 911!
- DO know the house you are babysitting in. Learn where all the exits are located, where fire extinguishers are stored, and where the first aid kit or supplies are kept.
- DO learn about the kids you are watching. Be informed of any allergies, likes, dislikes, and personality quirks. The more you know, the better prepared you can be.
The Don’ts:
- DON’T invite friends over when you are babysitting. This is not a slumber party or a social hour…this is a job and the children should have your full attention.
- DON’T talk on the phone, unless the children are sleeping and the parents have given permission.
- DON’T ever drink or use drugs while babysitting! If you are old enough and smoke, find out if you may smoke while on the premises, including where and when.
These are some of the most important points to babysitting that you should always keep in mind. When you are babysitting, you are the grown-up and need to act accordingly.
