In the writing world, NaNoWriMo can make an author out of an everyday person. In addition, it only takes one month! The explanation is simple:

A phenomenon called NaNoWriMo, meaning National Novel Writing Month, was started several years ago in 1999. During the month of November, anyone with an idea for a novel (or even someone who is completely clueless) can sit down and become a winner! To become a winner, all you have to do is write 50,000 words.

Yikes! 50,000 words is a lot, true. At a constant pace of approximately 1,500 to 2,000 words per day, you will be able to make that goal.

The growth of this National Novel Writing Month program is absolutely amazing. In the first year, only 21 people sat down with the intent of writing that novel and only 6 actually succeeded. In 2005, a mere 6 years later, 59,000 people signed up to write their novel and 9,769 actually succeeded!

Although there will not be almost 10,000 new books on the shelf this coming Spring due to the NaNoWriMo winners, there will be a lot of people with the bragging rights of finishing something they started. Who knows…the next bestseller may start as some “average Joe” challenging himself/herself this November.
