Everyone has friends. However, some can really be considered acquaintances. An acquaintance can be considered a “casual friend”, or someone you are comfortable doing impersonal activities with, like someone you can take in a movie with or accompany to the beach on some weekends. With an acquaintance, you probably won’t talk about anything deeper than the weather or current fashion trends.

You can also have a “good friend”. These are the friends that may (or may not) stick with you for years. With a good friend, you can dispense with the courtesies and speak your mind, without worry. You may or may not be your total self with a good friend and delve into your deepest feelings, in hope of advice or support.

A “true friend” is so much more than someone you can chat with occasionally or go shopping at the mall with every now and then. When you think about those closest to you, look at these traits and see if those you call true friends really fit into this category:

    A True Friend Is:

    1.      Someone who can be called upon at any time of the day or night. Even at 2 AM, you feel comfortable calling this person and expressing what is on your mind.

    2.      The person we can ask for back-up support. Anytime help is needed, a true friend will be there to lend a hand, no matter the circumstances. Excuses of another activity or meeting will not be given by a true friend when you have a desperate situation.

    3.      Someone you can be yourself with. You don’t have to put any kind of a “front” or “game face” on with a true friend.

    4.      A person who will do something for you with no expectations of repayment or getting anything back.

    5.      Someone who won’t analyze your every move or criticize your every decision.

    6.      Someone who will be there for you no matter what! Even when supporting you hurts his or her chances at “being popular” or “getting ahead”, he or she will still back you up.

With these items in mind, look at your closest friends. Are they really true friends? If even one of the people you are thinking of does fit into the category of a true friend, you are a very lucky person.
