Well, except for the Greek Orthodox, I guess the rest of us are done with our holiday festivities. (Actually, I attended a friend’s Greek Orthodox Christmas celebration once in mid-January, and it definitely felt strange…) Tell the truth now-aren’t you glad it’s over?

Sometimes I think that, as repetitive as daily life is, it’s not so bad because it is predictable. Most of us know pretty much what we’ll be doing around a certain time, and we’re forced to squeeze in what we prefer to do around those set parameters. I believe we need that. Those days of lolling around would get old if they stretched out for weeks-just look at trying to keep kids entertained during the summer. Our work environments may not be everything we wish for, but at least the problems there take us away from other problems for a short while!

By tomorrow night, most of us will have stashed our holiday decorations back in the basement or attic, and most of the leftovers will be gone-one way or another.

After throwing away all remnants of the holiday, I usually get onto a roll of discarding a whole lot more. As I do so, I’m amazed by how things accumulate. I live with only 2 other fairly neat and clean individuals, and still it seems that unneeded stuff reproduces like crazy. In the last few days I cleaned out: our tool box (throwing away about 2 pounds of unrecognizable gizmos that, hopefully, I’ll never need), my sewing box (I’ll never live long enough to use up all of the thread or buttons) and my crafts box (nothing like dried up paint and spilled glitter to put an end to creative ideas).

I also use this time of year to re-evaluate my wardrobe and try to find some deals on the winter clothes that are still necessary where I live. There are some out there, but as of just two days ago, bathing suits have already hit the stores.

In my youth, I loved January because I usually started new classes then in various activities holding my interest. It’s not quite the same now; any classes I take are pretty much the same as always and right now I’m not interested in trying anything new.

So, for this writer, January has already shown itself to be business as usual, and I’ve done my part in cleaning house and making way for the junk that will be invading my space during this upcoming year. That’s the most any of us can do: wipe the slate clean and look ahead, without necessarily getting our hopes up. Remind me of this in a couple of months as the winter doldrums set in!
