The American Dietetic Association is the nation’s largest association of nutrition experts and professionals in the food industry. They work hand in hand with the US Department of Health and Human Services, a government agency, to offer well balanced diet plans.
1200 Calorie ADA Diet
Occasionally, rapid weight loss is needed, especially if a person is morbidly obese and their weight puts them at immediate risk of eminent health complications. A typical 1200 calorie diet includes very small portions of bread and fat, raw vegetables and fruits and very lean meats. Some patients are encouraged to go on a 1000 calorie ADA diet for two weeks before increasing daily caloric intake to 1200.
ADA 1200 Calorie 6 Meal Diabetic Diet
Diabetics are occasionally put on a 1200 calorie ADA diet to help stabilize and maintain healthy blood sugar levels. The precept of the 1200 calorie, 6 meal ADA diet for diabetics is that meals should be between 150 and 200 calories each and should take place every 3 hours while awake. Each meal must contain some form of protein and complex carbohydrate, such as 2 ounces of lean turkey and 1 slice of whole wheat bread.
1500 Calorie ADA Diet
Some diabetics and dieters with less than 50 pounds to lose find a 1500 ADA diet much more reasonable with results similar to those on the 1200 calorie diet. The ADA diet limiting calories to 1500 per day requires six meals per day, with each meal consisting of 200 to 300 calories each. A 1500 calorie vegetarian ADA exchange diet was designed to eliminate animal products and increase the number of whole grains, legumes and rice.
Finding ADA Approved Diets
A number of other ADA diets exist. A 1600 calorie ADA diet was popular a few years ago and plans are still on the Internet, though not on the ADA website. There is an 1800 ADA diabetic diet to help control blood sugar. The main purpose of 1800 calorie ADA diets is to slowly and steadily take off weight. Men and women who are very physically active may benefit from a 2000 calorie ADA diet.
Contact an ADA registered dietician or go online to find a sample 1800 calorie ADA diet, a diabetic 2000 calorie ADA diet or the ADA low carbohydrate diet. Before starting any diet, it is important to speak with your primary care physician.
