The Motley Fool, http://www.fool.com, is a first rate web site offering financial news and advice primarily about the stock market and they use their ability to publish timely articles to make money through advertising, newsletter and other subscriptions, discussion boards and other financial services and deals.
Having followed the stock markets for a long time, I have found that timing often, but not always, plays a big role in how much money you make when investing. Since I am writing this article on Sunday, March 25, 2007, I am selecting this arbitrary date to offer you a chance to follow the performance of stocks The Fool states on its web site that it has at one time invested in. Since they claim to be holding eighty percent of the stocks they discuss, I think it is fair game to follow the stock quotes of the companies mentioned or, in the case of an acquisition, the equity of the acquirer and watch, as time passes, what happens.
The Fool has several portfolios so I will cover them one by one. First there is “Stock Advisor.” Listed under this heading are:
Activision, ATVI, $18.14
Quality Systems, QSII, $41.91
They say these stocks are undervalued. We shall see.
The second portfolio is called “Hidden Gems.”
Transkaryotic, which was acquired by Shire, SHPGY, which is $63.99
CNS Inc., CNXS, which was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline, GSK, which is $54.84
Mine Safety Appliances, MSA, $42.73.
In the case of Transkaryotic and CNS either you take cash and find new investments or you take shares in the acquiring company.
Also mentioned are
DELL, DELL, 22.83
Southwest Airlines, LUV, $15.00
Wal-Mart, WMT, $47.91
The third portfolio I am covering is “Income Investor.” Mentioned are:
Pepsi, PEP, $64.09
Philip Morris, MO, now known as Altria Group, but is spinning off its Kraft subsidiary so this “stock dividend” and the new stock for MO, which is customarily referred to as when issued is $63.56
Johnson and Johnson, JNJ, $60.45
They have also specifically recently recommended CDW Corp., CDWC, which is $62.43, and Netflix, NFLX, which is $23.75.
Since the only purpose of this article is to follow the stocks mentioned into the future, I am not offering any commentary or analysis. However, I will list some stocks I am following for purposes of comparison
Google, GOOG, $461.83
Cisco, CSCO, $26.19
Avaya, AV, $11.88
Juniper Networks, JNPR, $18.94.
The only purpose of this article is to follow the stock market and get deeper insight into investing. For reasons of length and time, I have stopped after three portfolios although Fool offers more options.
