Traveling with children isn’t always easy but it doesn’t have to limit you to an impersonal hotel chain with donuts and apple juice for breakfast. There are plenty of other options, most notably New Hampshire bed and breakfast accommodations. There are a plethora of kid-friendly B&Bs around the Granite State

    New London Inn

The New London Inn advertises that their New London, New Hampshire B&B is most appropriate for children over eight years old, but they are willing to accommodate all ages. This inn is just minutes from the Colby-Sawyer College and their fitness center, featuring a rock climbing wall, summer camp for kids and state of the art equipment all open to the public for a small fee.

    Maria Atwood Inn

In the Lakes region of New Hampshire, bed and breakfast accommodations include the Maria Atwood Inn, a kid-friendly inn that opens their doors to “well behaved parents.” During your days away from the inn, this B&B is close to Ruggles Mine, Half Moon Arcade (including a penny arcade) and Loon Center and Wildlife Sanctuary.

    Meadow Wind Bed and Breakfast

Among the trees of the White Mountains is the sweet town of Hebron on the northern shore of Newfound Lake in New Hampshire. Bed and breakfast accommodations in this area are somewhat common, each inn offering its own history to present to its guests. This restored farm will delight children of all ages, as everyone is welcome at Meadow Wind. You can launch a kayak or canoe from the shoreline near the Meadow Wind to spend your day on the water, hike the nearby Appalachian Mountain Trail or head to the slopes for a day of skiing less than an hour away.

    Snowvillage Inn

The Snowvillage Inn bed and breakfast is more than a place to rest your head, it’s a place to fill it with world knowledge. Chefs young and young at heart will enjoy their once-a-month cooking weekends. Each of their cooking weekends include themed lessons, taught by an American Culinary Federation and the World Association of Chefs’ Societies trained professional. They also offer gardening weekends a couple times a year. Children of all ages are welcome.

    Bartlett Inn

Spend a day with your family outdoors in the White Mountains, conveniently located in the backyard of the Bartlett Inn. This Vermont B&B is quite kid-friendly and also permits Fido or Fluffy to stay in their guest rooms. With more than 1000 miles of hiking and biking trails for outdoorsmen and women of all abilities, you’ll find reconnecting with nature will also reconnect you to your children as well. You can also drop a canoe into the Saco River for a wet day of fun.

    The Wilderness Inn

Not only does the Wilderness Inn, located in North Woodstock, New Hampshire permit children to stay at their bed and breakfast, they offer special packages for them. There are special ski and snowboard packages to three nearby resorts. They offer directions, hints and tips for entry into the annual Cardboard Box Race, held downtown. During the summer, there are bikes available and they can arrange a golf tee-time for you at one of the nearby child-friendly courses.

Tips for Vermont B&B Stays with Children

When you decide on bed and breakfast accommodations in Vermont and you know you’ll be bringing children along, there are a few things you can do to make the stay relaxing for you, your children, the innkeepers and the other guests.

For starters, when you make your reservation ask for outlet protectors or any other safety measures you need be in place before your arrival. Innkeepers are usually all too happy to accommodate any kind of safety measure you request. If there are any dietary needs or restrictions, such as access to a microwave or a peanut allergy, make sure you let the innkeeper know.

Plan on arriving in the afternoon or early evening rather than in the middle of the night. Not only does this take some of the stress out of arrival, you and the kids will have time to get your bearings before falling to sleep.

Once you’re set up in your room or rooms, take a walk in the neighborhood or property. Consider bringing a Frisbee or arrange in advance for a picnic dinner to allow you time to enjoy a meal without the pressure of table manners.

Discuss proper manners before heading down to breakfast each morning. While your fellow guests will tolerate a little silliness at the table, tantrums and food fights should be avoided at all costs. No bed and breakfast guest finds that relaxing.

Plan a daily schedule that will allow your children to exert some energy and see more than the walls inside the B&B. Vermont bed & breakfast innkeepers are usually happy to help you find nearby goings on and activities for families. In the alternative, you can use the Internet to search for the website and community calendar of the city or town you will be staying in. You can also search for a city newspaper that may have an activities or happenings section.

Make any arrangements for anything you or your child might need during the night before they hit the sack. Remember there are others in the house sleeping and there’s no front desk or housekeeping staff available. If your child needs medicine during the night or needs music to fall asleep, get these prepared around dinner time to save rushing around at the last minute.

Vermont bed and breakfast innkeepers expect children to be mindful of their belongings. Discuss common house rules before the trip and remind your children of them gently and periodically during the time away from home. Reward their good behavior and they may very well be asked back again.

Some inns offer an in-room DVD player and television or access to one in a common room. Consider renting a few of the kid’s favorite movies and bringing them along to play in the evening, to help them wind down.
