Over the weekend I had the pleasure of revisiting the experience of horseback riding. It still thrills, as you “horse people” out there may have already suspected.

Last month, I met a lady who has owned horses for most of her life. She invited me to meet her “baby” (who is 17 hands tall, or at least 8 feet in human terms), as well as her new donkey. I thought it sounded like a pleasant way to spend a summer day, so my daughter and I ventured out into the country.

The barn smells were still the same, but this stable is also home to a deaf cat, a three legged cat, a chubby Siamese cat, a lion-mane rabbit, and a peacock that chases turkeys. (This stable will also be the future home for two more young donkeys, but I’ll save that for a future article…)

In any event, it was a wonderful day, made even better with the anticipation that we will return for actual lessons. My daughter took to the Western style quite naturally, and I will attempt English saddle riding once again. It’s exciting; the connection between man and horse continues to live on!
