Let me just say, I love orange juice. I always have and always will. To me, it’s so much better than that over-sweet apple juice, too-thick tomato juice, and nasty-bite pineapple juice.
You’d think it would be a simple matter to buy OJ, but of course nothing is easy. A few nights ago I ran into the grocery for a few things and spied the orange juice on sale. It was in a special display area, and seeing the half dozen or so varieties all lined up the way they were, it struck me that it is amazing what’s offered to the public now, in comparison to even a decade or two ago.
When I had my first apartment, I remember buying frozen condensed juice because it was easier to carry. My choices were between 3 brands and how big of a can to get for that week. Now, there is no pulp, less pulp, some pulp, and lots of pulp, all with different combinations of added vitamins and calcium. Not to mention there are a lot more brands, many of which blend mango, pineapple, banana and who know what else to the oranges.
This kind of thing wears me out. I don’t like having to make more decisions.
You have to hand it to the suppliers, though; they are bound and determined to meet the needs of everyone in the world with their various offerings. I applaud them for their ingenuity and desire to give customers a choice. We simply have too many choices.
For the record, I have narrowed my search, as they say. I will not buy store brands as they don’t taste orange-y enough to me. I will not buy juice with any amount of pulp because I think that the whole point of drinking juice is to avoid pulp in the first place. If pulp is what I wanted, I’d eat an orange. And, regarding A, D, and calcium supplements, well, I’m flexible. But don’t expect me to adjust my daily vitamin regime on those days I drink juice; I have enough to worry about!
