There is a basic acidic dispute between the recently elected Democratic Governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, and the long serving Republican Majority Leader of the State Senate, Joe Bruno., allegedly over ethics reform or a lack thereof in Albany and beyond.
In a strong armed effort to get action and the upper hand on his alleged campaign reform legislation to reduce the amount of so called corrupting money overly generous citizens interested in politics, government, charity or whatever can contribute, Governor Spitzer has accused former boxer Bruno of misusing state aircraft for political purposes, a cynical practice the Governor himself, as rumor has it, has engaged in.
There were records kept that were not supposed to be tallied, there was alleged spying and there were leaks by henchmen, oops, staffers of the so called “Sheriff of Wall Street,” a self-described steam roller.
Mr. Bruno and his Republican allies are trying to turn the tables on the Governor by decrying the use of so-called dirty tricks by the Democratic Administration. An ongoing investigation into such underhanded tactics is being undertaken by Republican allies of the Senate Majority Leader with requests for testimony being issued and served. Actually, they are demanding truthful testimony since subpoenas are offers that are hard to refuse because the Republicans want to embarrass the Governor before he embarrasses them or anyone else. One Democratic state employee has already left his government job admittedly after he was suspended for his role in the scandalous affair and is supposed to be joining a well connected lobbying firm almost immediately upon leaving government service, an allegedly corrupt practice that Governor Spitzer has supposedly railed against. What is worse, there appears to be a dreadful lack of cooperation with a duly constituted investigation on the part of the Spitter regime.
In this light, it should be pointed out that Governor Spitzer’s reputation as “The Sheriff of Wall Street” was partly built on the ouster of Dick Grasso, the former head of the capitalistic New York Stock Exchange, for allegedly making too much money at the nonprofit home to multibillion dollar international corporation’s ownership base, and for busting Hank “Ace” Greenberg for engaging is creative insurance deals that were primarily designed to boost profit rather than actually take risks.
To be sure, the primary issue of this dispute is who can gain the upper hand in headlines with both sides claiming to be more honest than the other. So the Democrats are now spreading rumors about Joe Bruno’s taxes with the Republicans expressing outrage at the fact that many Administration nominees who need confirmation have been engaged in political fund raising where the Republicans normally hold an advantage leading them to object to the Governor’s proposed fund raising limits, which would allow more candidates who are unable to raise meaningful amounts of money to vote on billion dollar construction projects and the multibillion dollar state budget.
It appears this brouhaha is going to continue for a while since humbling a steam roller does not appear to have solved the problem.
