State politics In New York appear to have deteriorated to the point that Albany Republicans are hoping to prove that there are lies on the official record in testimony already given by aides to the Democratic Governor, one Eliot Spitzer, who has prided himself on being called the Sheriff of Wall Street. Just as in the case of financial analysts lying fibs are a no-no under a legal microscope, with false testimony in legal proceedings coming under the category of perjury, a rather serious criminal offense.
Governor Spitzer has also retreated from his proposal to allow illegal aliens to obtain some form of driver’s license. His point that it would encourage illegals to obtain car insurance flies in the face of the legal restriction that driving without insurance or without a license is a violation, subject to official penalties, even though there appear to be many perpetrators of this irresponsible type of behavior, who ought to be discouraged from flaunting the law, but currently apparently are not.
Governor Spitzer has also backed away from internet taxation, another retreat for someone who thought of himself as a political steamroller.
This does not bode well for future developments. Having encountered withering opposition to his recent initiatives the question arises where does Governor Spitter go from here. He may have to revisit drawing board to rethink his approach to governing in the face of a legally sanctioned opposition party.
One of Governor Spitzer’s problems is that immigration comes under primarily federal jurisdiction, where Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate and apparently anointed party favorite, is trying to hedge her bets by obfuscating. The charge from her Democratic opponents that she is closer to the Republican position tells you what the anti-Hillary crowd is fond of: self gratification and knocking political compromise is not an offer of bipartisanship. But then again there may be an element or rule or ruin that needs deeper scrutiny. On the other hand, that may be the mendacious mentality running this show.
Take taxes and appropriations. It is generally accepted that Democrats will spend more money and seek more revenue than the opposition. Unless they tell you that isn’t what they are doing. Explaining why a book like “Catch 22,” about the military, where the government has a heavy hand is so relevant.
So Hillary may not want to tell you what she is doing but if she is the nominee she will have to answer the Republicans in debate and, if elected, will have to offer a budget, make a State of the Union address and propose legislation. Raising the important question of Where Is Hillary Going?
