Have you become so used to your colors, fonts and type sizes that it drives you crazy to use someone else’s computer? We’re becoming pretty spoiled in being able to make so many personal choices.

Case in point-this morning we did maintenance on our system and found that Yahoo is continuing to persist in our selecting their new home page, emphasizing advantages over the old one. Now, I had already custom designed my home page to have exactly what I want, where I want. This is a tried and true format with which I have become quite comfy. I have no interest in changing, except for occasional background revisions to reflect the season. (By the way, Yahoo, why did you remove the snow option? Who cares about camouflage and industrial scenes?) Anyway, Yahoo has made it really hard to ignore their offering; a user has to press no fewer than 3 buttons to keep their original page…yikes. Then, when I finally got it back, the font and size had been changed. Being in a perpetual rush, I had no time to play with it and decided to keep it as is. However, after just a few minutes, I realized I couldn’t stand it anymore, and recaptured my preferences.

Isn’t it funny how a little thing like changing the font size on our screens can be unsettling? Sitting down to what we expect give a sense of security. When something is moved against our will, life doesn’t feel right…it’s like being in a hotel; you have what you need, but there’s the undercurrent of “You know this isn’t home!”

Occasionally, I somehow hit buttons that cause my toolbars to disappear, and that drives me crazy, too. Although I work on my computer for hours a day, I still don’t understand how things like that happen. I like my toolbars just the way they are, and at the same time, can’t understand how others can have every possible Blubster, Yahoo, MSN and AOL option listed on theirs, taking up a quarter of their screen. It’s all in what you get accustomed to seeing…

On that note, I think I’m going to go really wild and use white fonts against a dark background. That’s enough excitement and change for me today. Color differences, I can take-but don’t mess with anything else because it’s like rearranging my furniture while resizing it. Even if I can find what I need, it no longer seems to fit right…
