My neighbor asked me to come over to her house next weekend to take a look at her Christmas decorations. This will be something to see, as she paid someone to design a theme, do her shopping, and then put it all together. She said she has 39 strings of garland, with 100 lights each-and her tree isn’t even up yet.

    Wow.

We have another family friend who takes the first week of December as vacation every year, in order to decorate. Her tree is so large and lit, electricians needed to install a separate power supply for it. That is, her tree in the family room. The tree in the dining room can work off the general house current.

    Wow again.

Christmas really brings out the desire to decorate in many folks-and decorate big. We happen to live less than a mile from a house that’s on the news every year because it is a masterpiece, and money for viewing this work of art goes to our city’s Children’s Hospital. The owner’s electric bill for November-January is a few thousand dollars, I believe.

I think these kinds of displays can’t help but be awesome, but I can’t imagine the time and energy to do all of that. I grew up in a household that celebrated each and every holiday with decorations in almost every room, and it finally got to me around the age of 15. When I moved into my own place, I vowed never to have all that, the towels, salt/pepper shakers, napkin holders, wall ornaments, welcome mats, etc. etc. etc. The list is literally endless. I have two centerpieces and a few items here and there, and that’s it. (I tend to prefer silver and gold, with a small collection of snowmen, in case anyone is interested.) It’s not even because we’re an interfaith household; it’s because I personally don’t want to see Santa and Rudolph and elves grinning up at me from every corner.

But everyone is different, and for those who want to immerse themselves in all things Noel, I applaud your desire and dedication to create such a festive environment. Good luck with your holiday decorating this year; I hope it turns out to be just as perfect as you hope!
