In my humble opinion, politicians look upon sex as a weapon to subjugate and humiliate people rather than anything a heterosexual citizen is entitled to. I am sure there are going to be many varied and sundry interpretations of this editorial introduction.
The media understands this game extremely well and makes the most of it to sell ads, time, subscriptions or whatever else they make money on.
So we have Senators Larry Craig and David Vitter, exposed and humbled, but not politically ousted, as Louisiana Representative Bob Livingston found himself a couple of years ago.
Don’t forget Senator Craig not only has a wife, but it appears he has had several boy friends so this new fangled life style model of homosexual marriage does not appear to apply to his case. Not only does he deny being gay, but coming clean would force him into a bigamous situation, a serious violation of law making him eligible for hard time. Senator Vitter appears to believe in pay for play, if you know what I mean.
In the 1950s politicians handled this sort of thing quite differently. “The Tennessee Waltz,” which goes like this,
“I was dancing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see,”
was used to embarrass Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver to great effect because he had the temerity to espouse the anti-trust laws against certain media interests.
“I introduced her to my loved one
And while they were dancing
My friend stole my sweetheart from me”
Senator Kefauver was fond of patting women on the behind and the sexual innuendo drove the Democratic nomination to Illinois Senator Adlai Stevenson, who lost to Ike, who has been alleged to have had a fondness for female military chauffeurs.
Then there was Adam Clayton Powell, Democrat of New York, who was a married clergyman with a girlfriend or two on the side. He got bounced from the Congress only to win re-election from his Harlem district. Part of the motivation behind this appears to have been that his colleagues did not want him to head the House Education Committee.
Of course, over the years, the public has witnessed Wilbur Mills making a splash with Fannie Fox and Rita Jenrette’s confessions on the Capitol Steps so the tawdry tale of sexual politics continues with “Hustler” publisher Larry Flynt looking for spicy tidbits.
Now we have Hillary Clinton, whose background has been exposed to public view. In light of her past political sins, I would expect a continuing tradition of mistresses in the new Administration just as they popped up under her husband’s aegis, more flaps about tasteless political tactics and so on. I want to know if do we need a replay. I keep hoping the Republican leadership will speak now or forever hold their piece. Clearly, Hillary is anything but an example of a good woman. Holding her up as a role model is insulting, to say the least.
The “Tennessee Waltz” concludes,
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Now I know just how much I have lost
Yes, I lost my little darling
The night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz
If Don Imus who has put the I Man back into Imus In The Morning needs controversial, titillating music, this is the ticket.
Why not a pleasant Mike Huckabee versus Barack Obama race between two apparent gentlemen. Beats negativity and hostiility. Beats Kinky Friedman by a country mile, let me tell you.
