The 2008 Race for the Presidency is less than one month old, but it already is fast becoming clear that this is going to be an endurance test rather than a quick sprint to the convention based on the way the vote splits, the candidates act up and the unsettling controversy that clouds so many national and local issue that are supposed to have clean solutions applied have not cleared up anything.
A Republican needs 1,191 delegates to lead the elephantine Grand Old Party, while a Democrat needs 2,025 to ride at the head of the donkey party. Thus far, Mitt Romney leads with 68, but John McCain has 38 and Mike Huckabee has 26. So no one can claim delegate leadership as of yet. For the Democrats, Barack Obama has 38, Hillary Clinton has 36 and John Edwards has 18, all nominal pittances with Super Tuesday on February 5 promising a cornucopia of delegates and perhaps a final blow to the hopes of several political pretenders but also possibly no sharply drawn political conclusions.
Although the results are clearly preliminary, some issues have become transparently clear with Mike Huckabee bringing out religious voters, John McCain being militarily strong and Mitt Romney getting the business. After all, he has been accused of having money and he can’t help for the life of him escape looking like white bread. Ah, those undecided and waving voters.
Now on to the others. Rudy is now looking to make a last stand in Florida after rumors of his previously well known marital problems were spread high and low and cost him big time and Fred Thompson never made hey, hey of his media connections to collect a single gold vote. In fact, he hasn’t played into the celebrity vote at all, even though you would think finding Hollywood terrorism experts or even suspected terrorist would not be particularly difficult. Hollywood being such a foreign place filled with lively suspects. Visualize an older actor pontificating on neutralizing the enemy. The stuff that thrilling votes are made from.
As for the Democrats, Hillary’s side has mentioned drugs and Obama’s camp has brought up Monica Lewinsky. Does anyone expect a cigar for this performance? John Edwards continues to portray multinational corporations as the epitome of evil, having made millions from his handling them in the past. Wonder what he thinks of the stock market drop?
Now there are stories that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are duking it out. Is it the result of emasculation or an effort to get out the defensive vote? After all, how many times will voters fall for a crying shame?
No word on Norman Hsu, yet. Although he is reported to be in New York awaiting the latest results. Perhaps he will cop a plea for mercy, mercy, mercy. Thus far, no one appears to want to bring him up, but in the world of media frenzies there is no telling how much play his false pa c s are going to get down the line.
