Pictures of Senator Barack Obama in a traditional Somali warrior’s turban have surfaced on the internet and been given widespread distribution. I remember when former Democratic Presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, a one time Governor of Massachusetts, was caught wearing a camouflage helmet riding in an American combat tank. That was the political photo opportunity of its day. Confidence in Dukakis’ ability as commander in chief sank faster than his poll numbers could plummet, seriously wounding his candidacy and giving the Republican opposition a shot in the arm. Apparently, that is one of the goals motivating the unknown sources behind the pictures. Hillary Clinton, it should be noted, is once again in denial. On the other hand, I wonder what combat pictures of Mrs. Clinton would look like? Rolling pin thrower? Knife honer? Snaggle toothed and foaming at the mouth?
As a counterpoint, photos of other politicians have surfaced but none appear to be as controversial as that of Senator Obama. I would expect images of John McCain in a flight jacket and other military gear to surface quite frequently in the weeks to come.
This, of course, provides the answer to the question of whether I would be confident in Senator Obama protecting me: As the Amy Winehouse lyrics infamously go, “No. No. No.” I want to emphasize that I do not believe in paying protection nor do I enjoy being hassled. But life is not one long pleasure cruise and rough seas are common. A person has to sail on through. No matter who wins the final count in November to be sworn in as President, I will have to endure either Senator Obama’s socialism or John McCain’s alleged populism. That is how the system works.
I am also wondering what happened to gay rights. Senator Larry Craig of Idaho has been publicly rebuked for getting caught in a men’s bathroom engaged in foot tapping and hand jive, exactly what an undercover Minnesota police officer was looking for. Apparently, they do not have bigger crimes to investigate at the airport.
What is really disturbing is that the police spent time on this and prosecuted Senator Craig. It is also disquieting that the Senate Ethics Committee spent even more time evaluating and assessing this situation. What about Louisiana Senator David Vitter? He was caught with his pants unguarded. Where is the justice? Why isn’t this typical gay bashing. What else is a gay man to do? Harass women? We know Senator Craig would loudly condemn that.
And news reports claim the jails are overflowing. With what? Victims of overpriced lap dances? For shame.
