Attorneys are trained and educated people who earn a good living either giving advice and practicing law or, as often as not, some practical combination of the two.
Simple as it sounds you need knowledge and experience, just like any other skilled profession such as accounting, medicine or even education, to be successful, and then a legal professional has to deal with clients, to the best of his ability.
One thing an attorney can do is make property transfers official. I know because I now own my deceased mother’s co-op apartment. This was a fairly simple matter that I didn’t even have to do much about. My middle brother handled all the details. Hired the attorney. Explained the situation to him. Bingo. I am a property owner. Much to my financial benefit, my co-op appears headed for a change in status that should make the apartment worth in the neighborhood of two hundred thousand dollars. Not bad.
I can add that a deceased uncle practiced real estate law in Savannah, Georgia, leaving a few small properties that provided for his widow and three daughters upon his untimely demise.
A second category of attorneys is a defense attorney who can help protect your rights in the criminal justice system if you should be so unfortunate as to be charged with a crime. From a client’s point of view, their job is to produce a get out of jail free case and, if they are really good, even damages for wrongful prosecution and the like, although this is rare. Fortunately, I have never had to avail myself of such services.
Then there are business, civil rights and other related issues. I want to cite Donald Trump as a shining example of such litigation. At Mar A Lago in Palm Beach, Florida and at a Jones Beach catering facility he has had to deal with unreasonable demands from vested interests who appear more than willing to take out their demands at his expense. At Jones Beach, an existing food facility with a basement has been demolished. He needs a waiver to replace the basement. The fire department is too far away. The proposed new flood doors close too slowly.
Clearly, the complaints are designed to protect the desire of certain participants to prevent Mr. Trump from conducting business even if he install smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire extinguishers, possibly a large hydrant like source of water, motorized doors and whatever else would be reasonable because they are people who believe their ease and convenience is more important than his right to do business.
If I were The Donald, I would sue for incompetence, damages and court costs. Why let village idiots hassle you when you can show them who is a legal Apprentice and Who’s The Boss.
