Iron Man has kicked off the 2008 summer blockbuster season with a loud clang on the box office door.
The story is he packed the fans in their stadium seats like sardines in a tin can, a better story line than the film itself actually has.
Basically, Iron Man is Superman in an iron suit. He is as strong as steel, as tough as nails and appears to like getting as much bang for his buck as he can. He has Gwyneth Paltrow as his proper assistant, no micro minis here. She’s all business, let me tell you. She is so proper you wonder where her romance has run off to. But she is on the ball, although you wonder why she doesn’t get in on the movie excitement. She appears to be an administrative assistant who doesn’t have fun. Why, I don’t know. Iron Man leaves a lot of questions unanswered in his pursuit of the ultimate movie goal: conflict, excitement, and a happy resolution.
Then there’s Terence Howard as a military man. He appears firm and reliable and, of course, Jeff Bridges as an action foil, Iron Monger. Hey, even in comic books you need more than a super hero.
For reasons beyond comprehension, Downey and Bridges get into a battle royal. Is it that good dramatic roles are hard to come by? Could it be the revenge of the industry? Whatever the excuse, they go at it like WWF combatants and just add to the mayhem and excitement. As you should have guessed Iron Man beats Iron Monger, leading the audience to the conclusion that if you’re as strong as Iron Man you can survive to engage in the next battle.
There is excitement, lot’s of action, not much in the way of jokes, but lots of thrilling moments. That appears to be what it’s all about: excitement and mayhem with Iron Man coming out on top in the end only to be helped by the ever dutiful Gwyneth already preparing for her next heart rendering role.
Of course, Iron Man wins in the end, finally taking the podium to tell his side What I really find intriguing is that first class roles are so hard to come by. Chaplin was sooo long ago. So was Tucker and although both Downey and Bridges have done better than their daddies they could be at their Hollywood peak in this movie. That’s how the industry works.
Not to be outdone, there are more spills, chills and thrills to come this summer in the person of Speed Raced, Batman, and Indiana Jones. And presumably bigger box office for all.
