Indiana Jones has gone from raiders of the lost ark through the temple of doom on to the last crusade. Now he’s looking for the kingdom of the crystal skull and darn if he doesn’t find it. Not that it is the end of the line for him. There’s always life after death in the movies so you’re probably going to have a chance to keep watching for a bit, a fast roll of some sort, any role in fact, if not a complete sequel, at least a run on cable and even live network television afterwards.
At least for now, Indiana Jones has come back in that tan fedora. Bringing up memories of other hats: biker caps, military berets, hard hats, soft hats, hats in hand and even head dresses. Maybe not white hats, nor black hats. That would be too simple for an educated man like Indiana, a college professor, no less, of archeology. Black and white hats are more pop culture than history, don’t you know, and so prejudicial that Indiana has gone the old fashioned fashion route to good effect.
In part four, Indiana Jones has grown older and wiser despite the illusory magic of the movies. A little slower but still full of game. He still runs like a kid. Drives cars with abandon and after rejecting a gold mask and treasure that could fulfill the wildest dreams eventually finds the crystal skull that he’s after and all hell breaks loose.
What can you do.
Of course, Indiana Jones has company amidst all this excitement. Shia LeBoeuf channels Marlon Brando and James Dean. Maybe Arthur Fonzarella with the comb. After all, happy days are here again. Then there’s Karen Allen in fashion as only Karen Allen can Chanel and Cate Blanchett embodying, well, the forces of evil dressed to her military nines as whatever passes for the corrupt opposition these days. Nazis apparently being too passe to muck and so forties.
Now they say crystal skulls might be frauds, but you wouldn’t know it from this movie. This relic invokes supernatural paranormal forces that cannot be stopped before they break loose in the exotic back lot sets that you only find in Hollywood.
By way of contrast Speed Racer is a tame track meet that loses speed before it grinds to its foregone conclusion. Kinda of a drag, if you get where I’m coming from. John Goodman just doesn’t channel as well as Harrison Ford or Shia LeBoeuf. Perhaps it’s his background as Roseanne Barr’s main foil. Perhaps it’s just bad karma. Whatever it is, Indiana Jones rules and Speed Racer does not.
