Shopping in Manhattan is more stylish compared to the outer boroughs, including Brooklyn, where I live. There are more big stores and better known brands, perhaps related to the heavier traffic, better jobs and greater access to money. So if you’re interested in fashion, it’s Manhattan. If you like food or dining, it’s Manhattan. Luxury items. Entertainment. It’s Manhattan. Many top department stores such as Saks, Bergdorf’s, Bloomingdale’s, Lord and Taylor’s and so on have their main sales outposts in Manhattan.
Recently, some big retailers have such as Ikea, the furniture store, and Fairway, the supermarket, have established large footprints in Brooklyn. Red Hook, no less, a quiet section near the ocean, within sight of Manhattan. So this outer boroughs is moving up in many ways.
Since I live in Brooklyn, I am familiar with the retail experience here. While not as au current as Manhattan, there is still a lot to be said for shopping in Kings County Virtually all the nabes have stores where you can buy food, medicine, clothes and other necessities although shopping in some areas is better than in others. Each shopping experience is different, but if you want you can start on Kings Highway, which stretches from one end through the middle of the borough to the other end and covers most categories of merchandise. Eighty-Sixth Street is another long collection of stores as is downtown Brooklyn. Then there’s always Brighton Beach, which has a little of everything with a Russian flavor. In Brooklyn, there are more discount stores by far than in the so-called central business district. Yet, as far as I am concerned, Kings Plaza is probably the nicest shopping in Brooklyn. It is big, convenient, clean and comparatively safe. It is anchored by a Macy’s and a Sears but has one hundred other different retailers, including lots of fast food and brand name clothes. While not higher end, it is more expensive than what is available in most of Brooklyn, reflecting the better quality and better known brand names.
Whenever I go to Kings Plaza, it is usually bustling inside and out. There is normally heavy traffic at Flatbush Avenue at Avenue U because it is a main street near a major highway, The Belt Parkway. And it is served by several bus lines, adding to the convenience.
This mall is owned by Vornado, a major real; estate investment trust. A company far larger than Thor, the company that has invested in Coney Island, the neighborhood I have written three previous essays about and expect to write more on since I expect to attend a Coney Island Development Board public hearing on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, to see what I can see, so to speak.
