About This Editor: I am a writer. Have been writing for other sites, but expect to do most of my future work HERE! My expertise extends from the esoteric such as burning hydrogen to the unpredictability of the stock market and my writing makes me a jack of all trades and exasperated master of none. I have had some influence over national wildfire and water policy and there are hints of a change in energy policy, BUT as Samuel Goldwyn once said, "A verbal promise is not worth the paper it is written on."

The Wall Street Journal and Investor’s Business Daily are two entirely different newspapers that focus on business, IBD especially on the stock market, the Journal less so since a change in management. It was recently taken over by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Still business news is still news.

IBD not only continues to provide daily stock listings but highlights what it considers interesting stocks with charts and some statistics. The point is look at this company. It could go up. There is money to be made. Since I am somewhat more experienced and sophisticated about the market than a lot of people, I also view the problem as the stock could also go down. It takes knowledge, insight, business experience, financial acumen, a long term perspective and the like to grasp what is going on and make sound decisions. You need to bring business acumen to the paper in the first place, then do some thinking and perhaps more research. Not that basic information is harmful. It is also true that people in a specific business are in a firm pole position to make money on opportunities that present themselves. They are already involved, in a prime location, have experience and the ability to capitalize on available opportunities.

With this in mind, IBD covers the general market, commodities , mutual funds, bonds and the like with short stories relating the day’s new developments. Most articles are brief and to the point. One continuing feature is a big article on the third page about some leader who had a major impact on the world he lived in. There are two pages of issues and insights, but Investor’s Business Daily is predicated on the proposition that there is money to be made by the wise investor.

The Journal used to be something like this in the good old days. Now it has taken to featuring an added leisure section on Friday, then a Saturday edition, increasing ad opportunities and so increasing Journal revenue. Many stories are broader in outlook like manufacturing expands, flooding forces farmers to make tough decisions with national political and international relations from Russia to Spain to India receiving attention. Central banks are important. So is China. And Iraq and Afghanistan.  The European Union is big and growing ever more important with Union politics complicated. Business, politics and other important developments in South America, Central America and Africa are also covered.  There are three pages of editorial opinion and an increasing amount of consumer articles.

To tell the truth, I think Rupert Murdoch intends to increase circulation to as a way of increasing revenue and making his five billion dollar investment a profitable business decision. By way of comparison, The New York Times and USA Today have entire section devoted to business and The New York Daily News offers two pages or so and The New York Post can offer four or six, but a good understanding of business needs to be done in depth and keen perspicacity, more the province of a dedicated business newspaper like The Wall Street Journal and Investor’s Business Daily.
