The current world problem with global warming brings to mind other man made environmental problems.
A number of years ago Rachel Carson, in her book Silent Spring, exposed the destructive problems chemical pesticides, such as DDT that were meant to reduce harmful insect populations, were causing for animal life and the environment, from poisoning and destroying habitats to killing animals and interfering with reproduction it was not supposed interfere with, resulting in an eventual ban and an emphasis on the environment and more natural methods of controlling harmful bio-populations.
In order to bring about these reforms, there was a media campaign reporting on the damage caused by pesticides and, eventually, government action.
Then came the discovery that the ozone layer, way up in the outer atmosphere, that protected living things from harmful ultraviolet radiation was being depleted by some exotic chemicals called fluorocarbons used as propellant in spray cans and as refrigerants to cool refrigerators, air conditioners and the like. Again, there was a media campaign exposing the damage fluorocarbons were doing and, again, the government acted to ban these harmful chemicals, ordering they not be used and replaced.
Now people are experiencing more extreme weather conditions with disruptive results and being shown dramatic pictures of ice having melted in places that had been frozen for the longest time, revealing the earth laying underneath, suggesting that the colder regions of this planet are getting warmer with an implicit threat that the oceans will rise and flood inhabited land masses amongst other catastrophic phenomena.
/So President George W. Bush says drilling for oil in offshore is going to increase energy supplies and will reduce the high price of crude oil. Butt this does not reduce the amount or carbon dioxide produced and doesn’t keep the air clean despite numerous promises made in the past.
This is the same fellow who believes pruning wood from national forests will reduce wildfires and provide fuel for gasohol even though our woodlands burn and re-burn and no commercial amounts of alcohol have been produced using this source and the price is high anyway.
And what happened to his interest in hydrogen and nuclear fuels? Perhaps he is getting old and has lost his way and can’t figure out which end is up.
furthermore, having ignored flood control for the longest time by looking for local action that was not going to materialize without firm leadership, especially from the top, and given the need for coordination where upriver dams could be used to produce either cheap electricity or hydrogen or both and I say it is obvious something rotten is going on in Washington.
I might add that old fashioned water wheels can be used to add value in this way, too.
Then there is the handling of wildfires, in general. Tom Daschle, for one, wanted to fiddle and debate while the fires roamed burning the countryside.
While these wonderful fellows don’t like the use of the terms scalawags and rascals, I ask you know, what other terminology is appropriate. My fellow citizens I think it is obvious these guys aren’t operating on the up and up.
In the meantime, the country continues to suffer.
