With the Conventions looming, announcement of vice presidential candidates nominees to be made and three debates scheduled, we are close to getting clarification on where the two major contenders for President stand and how the 2008 election will play out.
Barack Obama has just come back from a trip to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Middle East and Europe looking very important, like a major politician, even going so far as to tell the voters we need ten thousand more troops in Afghanistan. He also seemed to affirm existing United States policy in the areas he visited. This clearly does not appear to be any change, much less change we can believe in even though this now gives him decent foreign policy credentials thanks to John McCain’s suggestion that he make such an overseas trip. Clearly, a good experience is good experience.
Going forward, Senator Obama has apparently approved just three debates on domestic policy, foreign policy and a town hall style meeting despite the fact that John McCain wanted more because he seems afraid of clarifying issues or his position or even existing settled law. I wonder how the public is going to get a better idea of where he stands and what he is going to do if he does not spell out his policies during the campaign. Does he intend to sneak something up upon the electorate after it is too late to change people’s minds?
Senator Obama has gone on to complain about responses to his spouses campaigning, his so called funny name and his interest in paper money. The problem is if Michelle Obama did not make speeches the Republicans would have nothing to say about her unlike references to Cindy McCain’s prescription drug problems. Personally, I don’t mind the beer drinkers appeal. Bottoms up.
And why does Barack Obam want to look like a dollar bill? Does he intend to start printing money until he can buy enough foreign oil to make it cheap to buy?
Since Senator Obama has changed his name he is indeed Barry Barack or Barack Barry, much like the Importance Of Being Ernest that Oscar Wilde suggested and Hussein is, well, Hussein. It tells you where he is coming from.
Then there is his using sex to defeat Hillary and his opponents for the Senate and local Illinois offices. Has he no mercy on the vanquished? It is nice he is defending his wife. She could use defending. But what about defending this country? How about standing up for free enterprise and things like that?
On energy, drilling off shore might increase supplies and drive down the price of crude oil although it does nothing to reduce global warming. So does tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This also produces no new energy to replace what was used up. When does Senator Obama and Senator McCain come clean for safe, cheap, reliable, abundant water energy that has been amply illustrated and satirized by David Letterman’s water balloon experiment. Boom.
Once it is time for their respective conventions we are going to find out about their vice presidential choices and hear all sorts of campaign slogans. The Republicans appeal to oil interests. The Democrats appeal to people like Charles Rangel who do not want to pay market rates for first class accommodation. When is his ethics question going to be answered. Inn time to clarify issues for the voters or too late to do anything and let him get away with paying less than market rate for a luxury real estate deal?
When will they change? When will politicians relieve economic suffering and really solve national problems like the budget deficit and balance of trade short fall that keep hindering this country.
In conclusion, I say time is wasting. Why don’t politicians give voters real solutions for real problems. Time wasting and time is money, as the old saw goes.
