So the public has had several months of debates and primaries and now Vice Presidential choices and Conventions, leading up to the last two months of the election campaign and, finally, the vote that counts on Election Day.
Just what is going on and what does it all mean?
Well, in general, what has transpired gives us a general idea of where the politicians are and where they are headed. For example, Hillary Clinton, having decided she had been anointed for the Democratic nomination gave Barack Barry Obama no end of grief for having the audacity to hope he could win and not only close the voter gap, but even win enough delegates to claim the nomination outright before the Convention was held. For his part, Senator Obama also had the audacity to give Hillary no end of grief for her unusual marital problems that, in the end, she forgave him for, by endorsing him at the Convention and declaring Party Unity, as if that were a change you could believe in. Similarly and simultaneously, John Edwards, who was telling the voters he loved his wife and was going to trash, bash and strip cash from men who strayed from his idea of virtue seems to have had sex with that woman and appears to be paying her off, in the long run, although he currently claims he is not the father of her baby. As a result, he has been banned from high profile political events even though his political allies do not appear to want to clean him out. Just make him go away. Time will only tell what happens to him and the baby in the future.
As for the Republicans, John Wayne McCain beat businessman Mitt Romney and preacher Mike Huckaby by standing on his military record.
Right before the Democratic Convention, Barack Barry Obama, apparently in an effort to deflect attacks that he lacked experience, chose Joseph Biden, a long ingrained Democratic Senator from Delaware, who has been criticized for talking too much, as his running mate, a marriage of convenience if ever there was one. As evidence of his garrulousness, Senator Biden has virtually given Hillary Clinton a blank check for the very job he is vaingloriously seeking. Senator Biden has been in Congress so long that the media are studiously avoiding quoting him for fear of boring their customers to tears.
Perhaps the political excitement will come when Senator Obama shows hitrue dislike of people richer than he is even as he continues to rake in the money. A million per book. One hundred sixty nine thousand in pay. A millionaire’s house. And then there is Michelle Obama’s earnings. No wonder the Democrats are raising more money than the Republicans. They making their interest in self enrichment very clear while making every one else poor.
For his part, Senator McCain chose Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, in an effort to get out the women’s vote that Hillary Clinton ably demonstrated could do so much damage to Barry Barack Obama’s audacious hopes.
Governor Palin, with her designer glasses and pulled back hair appears to have given the McCain campaign such a boost that Senator Obama has decided to stir up a hornet’s nest by telling the voters that a pig with lipstick is still a pig. Just exactly what he meant by this is clearly open to interpretation even though it appears not only did John McCain use this exact phrase to attack Hillary Clinton but so did Vice President Dick Cheney. What an ironic coincidence. Talk about doublespeak.
On the Congressional front, more promises about energy have been made, a fairly common phenomenon over the past thirty years, with the political discovery of what are supposed to be crude oil deposits off the coast. Raising the obvious question where was all this energy hiding during all that time. You would think politicians knew how to stimulate the domestic economy and create jobs.
And why don’t politicians understand the value of water power? Is this a new Machiavellian maneuver or an old patronage ploy? Why, all of a sudden, does the gang on Capitol Hill now like more polluting crude oil but not clean water. Makes you sort of suspicious, doesn’t it? If politicians wanted to, they could be honest about the value of hydro power. That would probably put it over the top and save the national economy.
In the meantime, this appears to be a case of after Speaker up Pelosi the deluge? Of what? Red ink? Useless slogans? Meaningless political gestures? Water from the Gulf of Mexico? Do tell. As we wait for the future to make the schemes clear.
