While I do surf the web, I continue to listen to old fashioned radio. It is my wake up call: Imus In The Morning on what is still called ABC Radio though another company owns the stations, or National Public Radio, NPR, on what is called a public station, or the Z One Hundred Morning Zoo on a commercial FM station.
Even though the internet is the darling medium of the moment, terrestrial radio still has listeners as you can deduce from President Obama’s complaints about Rush Limbaugh’s conservatism and his joke that Rush is not a troubled asset. Indeed, no. He is racking up the jack. He earns big bucks. Yet for reason’s only the President fully understands, Barry Barack Obama is perking up ears and sending them to listen with all the free publicity he is giving El Rushbo for going over Republican talking points at length and being smug as a rug on a bug about it. So while it pays Mr. Limbaugh well, there is something self deprecating about the President helping the political opposition. Like it ls good for Obama’s political base. They feel he is fighting the good fight against evil sayers and unfair political opposition. After all, they are entitled. They won so they can take over. Besides Barry Barack Obama is helping them get fat off the cream of the land. Therefore, it makes sense to confuse Rush Limbaugh with the real Republican Party and this goes over well. Yet while the biggest radio commentator of our day may have clout and political power, he does not make law or run the government. Still, there is enough gravamen there to make his conservative beefs meaningful and add to his popularity, extending his syndication. Though I’ll bet he would like more clout over the election outcome. His side did not win so they cannot dip into the public purse.
In any case, syndication is where the action in network radio is. Reduce costs per listener by spreading them over several stations. Get free advertising from well known sources. Expand to a bigger audience so advertisers can be charged more. It is a new kind of media mass production.
That is also what has happened to Curtis Sliwa. Sliwa went on late night and he, too, is now being syndicated for his anti crime message. The Gottis. Street crime. Evil doers of all stripes, sizes and ilks. It appears both he and Citadel are going to rake in the big bucks big time. No sweat. Both you, I and Curtis are safe, thank goodness.
Then there is Don Imus. As raucus and controversial as ever, he is still a literary resource. If you have a book and want sales, talk to Don as Danielle Steele and Mike Lupica amongst others have made clear. He is also a boon to advertisers who love the way he plays his audience so should you feel tense why not have some Bigelow Tea or sign up with Net Jets for personalized flight. And the I Man even runs a big charity for kids who need some relaxation, civilized outdoor excitement and independence. But management has told him to tone down the imitations so his cast of well known caricatures has been reduced to The Godfather, Andrew Dice Clay, Larry King and other actual media types. His politics are forever cosy and timely. He knows where the real action is.
Unfortunately, as far as the topics I personally really care about such as fighting wild fires, improving flood control, combating pirates and using water power as a source of clean, cheap energy, I am left to continue to be politely persistent, something I think I am showing I am very capable of doing since I continue to hammer away looking for real world, meaningful answers.
So far not much other than public relations.
Yet I intend to go on preparing to knock down the next lame excuse or ruse or insufficient reply. As you are seeing now.
Unfortunately for the car companies, instead of trying to come up with an alternative fuel such as hydrogen or gasohol, Barry Barack Obama is into giving orders and creating mandates so he has promulgated new standards for fuel efficiency and clean air, stressing the car makers research budgets and not helping much with finding solutions. Typical big government approach wouldn’t you know.
