There is talk about bringing the trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed to New York City.
This has induced all sorts of comments from all sorts of places, with the media headline writers accusing him of being the mastermind of the September Eleventh attacks. Something he was not. He may have been heavily involved. He may have gotten the dastardly deed done. However, he did not supply the money nor the organization nor any of the other more involved details that went into the attack. So, as far as I am concerned, calling him a mastermind is like calling an axe murder a brain surgeon. It is more than grating. It passes shallow and sensational headline writing for deep analysis. It is not my cup of political commentary. Perhaps something can be done to improve the public’s grasp of these issues. Yet yelling and screaming about a show trial in New York, the scene of the crime, does not catch any of the other ring leaders still at large. It does not put the kibbosh on further dangers.
This does lead to certain further conclusions and second thoughts, however. Bringing Khalid Sheik Mohammed to trial might satisfy a lot of aggrieved citizens, but it is not much of a response to the continuing threats this country still faces from evildoers seeking to establish their own version of the equivalent of the Third or Fourth Reich or of whatever it is they want when they talk about whipping your Heimie and other oppressive nonsense.
So why does not this country go out and capture Osama Bin Laden. He continues to produce videos bragging about his jihad prowess. He continues to make threats. He apparently is still a violent terrorist intent on what citizens here view as criminal activity. Why not bag him and offer him the tender mercies of the American justice system if he does not escape again in a dress and, hopefully, that charade won’t succeed again. Surely, this would be a bigger step towards ending the conflict and future security pitfalls than screaming at and about a thug already in custody, who, therefore, cannot do much except serve as a poster child for further irrational attacks and the inability of American officials to provide immediate solutions.
As the FBI’s Ten Most Unwanted Posters show it should be possible to develop leads. Then it should be possible to follow up. Where can he hide. What government would protect him. Since he has committed heinous criminal acts, it should not be hard to extradite him from most countries, something that should be reassuring, except for the fact that he has been wanted and uncaptured for ever so long.
The Taliban gave Osama safe haven because they were brothers in arms. Most governments would readily turn him over if asked so why not ask and, if necessary, keep politely asking. “Where in the world IS OSAMA BIN LADEN??” Admittedly, this has the air of oh dear what can the matter be. But in politics I have found it pays to politely repeat yourself until your point gets across.
It should be pointed out Pakistan is already fighting with insurgents, presumably those responsible for the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. This is a heavy load. A burden on their own citizens. Against their own citizens, except for the fact that there is what amounts to an open revolt against a duly constituted and well established government. That the current American government fully supports and hopes is successful even though what their eventual aim is is not completely clear. While violence against an existing government is generally considered a crime by that state and supportive friendly foreign entities, there has to be some overall game plan as to where all this is going. Is it fighting until all jihadists are put away? Is it to defeat Al Qaida? Will the Pakistanis ever capture or kill Osama Bin Laden? Why do the terrorists keep coming out of the woodwork? American intelligence reports point to Taliban coming from Pakistan, but they do not publicly identify the goals nor the ends nor what the hoped for or expected end result is or will be.
As an outlet for further inroads into the enemy psyche in addition to drones why not employ virtual warriors to fill the night sky with Osama’s worst nightmares. Why should he and his allies rest easy? Why give the enemy peace of mind. Start out by repainting the Goodyear blimp. Go on to projecting horrifying images on the evening sky. Yelling. Screaming. War chants. Just like in the World Wrestling Federation. Let the enemy know we are tough and not going to take their drivel. We are not afraid. We can survive their empty threats with even greater counter intelligence.
A virtual army would be infinite. It would be fearsome. It would be willing to bring it on and, best of all, it would be unbeatable.
It is impossible to beat your own worst fears. Nightmares haunt. Doubts weaken.
Better yet, why not add the threat of a robot army added to American military might. We have highly precise and deadly missile and planes. Why not add and parade a robot army as a show of force and as a extension of American power. This should help extend our limited personnel resources greatly. Robots can readily be replaced and can keep going and going AND going. Furthermore, the more extensive use of bomb sniffing dogs would also probably help reduce the dangers our troops face. I keep hoping our military will keep looking for ways to protect, defend, uphold that ease the burden on American and allied soldiers.
I do not believe the Taliban could ever expect to defeat a robot army and it would ease the burden on existing troops.
Why not stand up for America? It can be done.
